How to Stop Apologizing for Existing

Let’s talk about the quiet ways women are taught to disappear.

We say “sorry” when someone bumps into us. We say “just” to soften a request. We say “I don’t want to be a bother” before asking for what we need. We shrink our voices, our needs, our presence—just to keep the peace.

It’s not politeness. It’s survival. And it’s exhausting.

Here’s the truth. You don’t need to apologize for taking up space. You don’t need to earn your right to speak. You don’t need to be small to be respected.

  • “Sorry, I just wanted to ask…”

  • “I know this is probably dumb, but…”

  • “I don’t want to be a burden…”

  • “I’m probably overthinking this…”

These aren’t harmless habits. They’re rehearsed self-erasure.

Try this instead:

  • “I have a question.”

  • “Here’s what I need.”

  • “This matters to me.”

  • “I’m not available for that.”

No apology. No shrinking. No performance.

You are allowed to exist without softening your edges. You are allowed to take up space without explanation. You are allowed to ask for what you need without guilt.

This isn’t about being rude. It’s about being real. You don’t owe the world a smaller version of yourself.

So, stop apologizing for existing. You’re already allowed to be here.
